As a songwriter, I look with great respect upon my favorite standards, and there are many. These songs are a joy to sing. I sing them because I love them, and because they teach me how to be a better songwriter. I hope you enjoying listening to them as much as I enjoyed recording them. This French song has been recorded by Jacques Brel, Nina Simone, and most recently by Belinda Carlisle, among many artists and in many languages. I don’t think there has been a song that says «desperation» quite as well as this one. It also expresses a lot of love and desire...and is oh so very French.
Johnny Mercer wrote these lyrics to show Judy Garland how infatuated he was with her; unfortunately, he didn’t share it with her until the day after she married someone else.
This Spanish song was written by a Mexican girl at the tender age of 15, yet is is packed with a lifetime of passion. Simply amazing.
How many songs do you know that can use the lyric “you cooked my goose” in such an elegant, yet naughty way? This is one of my favorite uptempo numbers.
There’s really nothing I can add here...this song says it all, and is so near to my heart, still...
This 1927 Gershwin & Gershwin tune feels like a dream coming true every time I sing it; how did they ever write this stuff? I don’t believe that anyone has dared to rhyme “amorous” with “glamorous” since!
Smooth and sad and tragically hip, this song gives you a reason to want to be a heartless so and so! It’s powerful and precise, too, weaving its web just like a black widow.
I grew up hearing my father sing this song, so it has always felt very much a part of me. This is truly one of the best Bert Bacharach/Hal David songs ever, and theirs is quite a large and accomplished catalog. Alfie is very unique, and very complex and I love singing it; I hope that sentiment comes through in this recording.
After Alfie, I just had to sing another Bararach/David tune. This song started out as an instrumental; I’m so happy it didn’t end up that way! The Look of Love could put an Ice Prince or Princess in the mood. Happy (and safe) listening! :)
This Italian gem is by an artist who captured my imagination when I was studying in Italy. Her name is Mina, and she still ROCKS! Read my blog if you’d like to learn more about her. I love her style, and I hope that my version of this song does her justice.
